How Training Became My Safe Space: Fitness and Mens Mental Health

There is a growing conversation happening across the world right now and it is one that many men have avoided for far too long. Mens mental health has reached a critical point and the silent struggles that so many carry can no longer remain in the dark. Men are conditioned to stay strong to stay quiet to carry on without showing weakness. But silence is often the heaviest load of all.


For many men, fitness has become the outlet they never knew they needed. A place where stress can be released without judgment and where emotion can finally move rather than remain trapped. For me this truth runs deep.


A Life Surrounded by Trauma but No Voice to Express It


I have spent my entire adult life in healthcare. Seventeen years as a trauma medic in the military, including two years on ambulances constantly exposed to injury, tragedy, and loss, followed by deployments to highly dangerous environments around the world. I have seen more trauma than most people will witness in a lifetime.


After leaving the military, I joined the NHS where I have now worked for almost ten years as a senior manager, overseeing a large surgical service through COVID. The pressure during this period was intense, with constant high stakes, urgent decision making, and responsibility for both staff and patient outcomes. These experiences added another layer of stress and mental load that is difficult to articulate.


Opening up has always been difficult for me. You can experience trauma every day and still never speak about it. You can patch up others while never patching up yourself. Fitness became something far greater than training. It became my peace, my coping mechanism, my safe space to breathe when everything else felt too heavy.


Why Fitness Works as Therapy for Men


Fitness is not just about the physical body. It creates a release that many men do not get anywhere else. Here is why it matters.


Fitness Provides Emotional Release


Training allows stress to escape through effort, movement, and sweat. It gives the mind somewhere to focus and the body somewhere to place emotion that is too difficult to verbalise.

When life feels chaotic, a training routine gives stability, purpose, and clear progress at a time when everything else feels unpredictable.

Fitness rebuilds the parts of a person that trauma and pressure weaken. Strength does not just return to the body—it returns to the mind.
